I have frequently integrated ARAKAWA GRIP into my works since the "Gravity" series, which started during COVID-19. This series with the theme of "Letting the Earth Take Its Course" is a collection of artworks in which a flat sheet of board is transformed by gravity, revealing various "forms" depending on the conditions of its surroundings. I gave these sculptures a minimum of incisions and positions for suspension. Therefore, I adopted ARAKAWA GRIP to maintain a minimal composition and a genuine interrelationship with the surroundings. The series has been featured at the Oku-NotoTriennale and the Kuroshima Art Project, among others, and has attempted to explore new forms emerging from the surrounding environment in various regions, showing the potential of each location while establishing a space where the three-dimensional objects could be displayed.
In addition, for the solo exhibition "Situated Situation" (2023), a series of pieces such as "Gravity" were mainly exhibited at the TIERS GALLERY. Architecture alone does not constitute a venue. Instead, a space is created by encompassing the fluid changes in circumstances, which include people and programs. Intervening in such a situation generates changes in the artworks, regenerating the space. It can be said that "the surrounding situation creates the artwork, and the situation creates the space. This solo exhibition also allowed us to ref lect on the nature of relational "derivation" involved in this context.
