KOHTEI is an art pavilion by sculptor Kohei Nawa and his firm Sandwich, built on the grounds of the Zen temple Shinsho-ji in Fukuyama, Hiroshima. The ship-shaped structure, constructed with traditional kokera-roofing and softly wrapped in wood, floats on a stone landscape.
The gradual slope leading from the landscape to the small entrance of the building is connected by a bridge, where ARAKAWA GRIP is utilized as a handrail. A slight opening was placed to prevent the bridge from interfering with the unity of the one-material shape of the building. Furthermore, a finish was applied to match the organic shape of the building, and elaborate details were facilitated by the ARAKAWA GRIP, which combines steel FBs and wires.
