We designed an exhibition booth at JAPAN SHOP 2017 for Arakawa & Co., Ltd. The company is well known for its product line of metal hangers called ARAKAWA GRIP, and we were asked to design the booth using the picture rails and hangers capable of carrying a maximum weight of 150kg. Our idea was to reimagine the exhibition booth as an exhibition space in an art museum and hang a gigantic 7-meter wide wooden picture suspended from only two points at both ends. To suspend the 7-meter wide piece without deflection or distortion using only two hangers, we adopted the Vierendeel structural system of rigid wooden frames without joints at the corners; the frames were composed of three 18-mm thick plywood using the pressure adhering method.
