In 2000, the utilization of ARAKAWA GRIP was expanding from exhibition display units to architectural spatial elements. The "Wardrobe" and "Aluminum Shelf," developed in collaboration with ARAKAWA GRIP, were designed to experiment with their usage as furniture pieces.
For "Wardrobe," our goal was to create a complete furniture structure with the mechanism of the ARAKAWA GRIP. The top panel and base container were secured with central pipe struts, and the storage elements were attached by 12 wires placed around the perimeter that are maintained in balance by tension. The "Aluminum Shelf" comprises a U-shaped aluminum plate folded and suspended by wires from a stainless-steel pipe placed at the top as a support.
